After: The Olaf Lee House

The Olaf Lee House Stabilized

The Olaf Lee House, a National Register of Historic Places property, is located in the Payne-Phalen neighborhood on Saint Paul’s East Side. The house, built in 1905, was designed by Clarence Johnston, the famous Saint Paul architect. According to the National Register nomination “the house is architecturally significant for its unusual eclectic design which combines Swiss Chalet, Craftsman and other elements into a convincing composition, making it the most sophisticated turn of the century house in the Payne-Phalen neighborhood.”

Edgerton Porch Before

Porch Stabilization on Edgerton

The front porch on this Queen Anne style house on Edgerton Street in the Payne Avenue neighborhood was falling off the house. Aditionally, the character of the house was covered by 1950s-style aluminum siding. The Restore Saint Paul loan program provided the homeowners with a low-interest loan and technical assistance to help stabilize the porch and replace the siding.

North Street Before

North Street Home Restored

The historic character of this 1888 Victorian home in the Dayton’s Bluff neighborhood was concealed by “low-maintenance” siding and aluminum awnings. The open front porch was also completely removed in an earlier facade remodeling. According to the homeowner, “It was awful and ugly and really cheesy, but we were sort of overwhelmed and scared, not knowing what we’d find underneath.”

Margaret Street Before

Vibrant Victorian on Margaret Street

The historic character of this 1887 Victorian home (the John Donaldson House, named after the carpenter who first lived there) was concealed by a 1931 renovation. The residence was sided with asphalt shingles and its architectural details were removed. In 2002, water damage to the façade necessitated a major restoration.
